driving from Croatia to Rome, Italy

I am driving from Rovinj, Croatia to Rome Italy later this week. Can anyone suggest a little town along the way to spend the night? It needs to be on the route --I don't have much time to take a detour off the roads. Also, it appears to take about 7 1/2 hours. Is that correct? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I hope you are aware that renting a car in one country and dropping it off in another country will incur exorbitant drop off fees. Inquire before doing so. Anyhow, on the way to Rome you will go through (or very near) the following nice historical cities: VENICE, PADUA, FERRARA, BOLOGNA, FLORENCE. Bologna is exactly half way. And I'm mentioning only the major cities. 7.5 hours is very optimistic because you will need to make some stops in between and you might encounter traffic. Also in Croatia you will be mostly on a two lane highway. Once you reach Trieste, you'll need at least 6.5 hours to Rome (driving only, no stops included). If you can make it from Rovinj to Trieste in 1.5 hours, you are looking at a total of at least 8 hours of driving, assuming you can keep an average of 120km/h (75 mph) on the freeway to Rome. Add pit stops to that amount.

Thanks Roberto! Sounds like it will take us more like 9-10 hours. Actually we rented through Autoeurope already without high drop off fees.

one other thing --- any thoughts on very small towns? We are looking for smaller towns/villages.
