driving from Abruzzo to Atrani across mountains to Salerno instead of along coastal road in October?

We’ll be driving from Abruzzo to Atrani in mid October. We’ve gone round and round on whether we should hire a driver (from Naples after we drop our car) or just drive our car and park it our Airbnb in Atrani. Not wild about the stress of driving the coastal road and others have mentioned going through the mountains to Salerno and then over to Atrani. We’d rather not take a train since we’ll have some luggage unless it’s super easy without a lot of transfers/walking. Any recommendations? Thanks!

I would drop the car in Salerno, unless dropping at Naples airport is considerably cheaper. I'd have no qualms about a drop-off in Salerno, but would avoid driving IN Naples.
There is no train to Atrani, so if you can handle the luggage, I'd do ferry. If not, a driver. I would not want to get excess luggage onto a bus. I believe ferries run until the end of October, but this can change with inclement weather: https://www.travelmar.it/en/index
Ferry goes to Amalfi and you can arrange transport from there. I always inquire with my accommodations also--I've gotten free pickups that way, on more than one occasion!

You may not need the car much in Atrani, however, if you decide not to keep it, and to return the car, you should do so in Salerno. Coming from Abruzzo the road to Salerno will be largely freeway all the way to Salerno.
