Im flying into Naples and going next day to Positano and Ravello. Is it easier and better to rent a car and drive or arrange for transfer? I hear driving there is a bit scary and parking difficult in the small towns. Any advice?
This recent post says the Amalfi road is closed for repairs, open intermittently, through July or something, I'm not clear on the details: go here and browse for the details http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/helpline/index.cfm/rurl/topic/29195/amalfi-drive-closed.html
Thanks for your responses. Any way to estimate taxi costs in the area? Naples airport to downtown for example
Driving is a bit scary and parking is difficult.
And that's an understatement.
The Amalfi Coast road is narrow, winding and congested. Unless you're staying somewhere distant from the buses, there's no reason to take a car. Instead, take the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento and take the SITA bus from there.
Just got back and drove to Postiano and Ravello. As long as you are careful driving not as bad as most will tell you. I drove a mini van and didn't really have a problem. The real issue is parking. Good luck. The problem with the buses is they don't run every 10 minutes and they do get crowded. You might have a hard time seeing serveal places in one day using the buses. By the way, Ravello was great if yu like geat views in a more quiet type of atmosphere.
Josh ~ parking can be difficult, but by far the best part of my trip was renting a sccoter and driving the Amalfi Coast. We rented a scooter in Sorrento & drove to Ravello. Absolutely stunning! I'm deathly scared of heights & had no problems. I would suggest public transportation so you can take in the view, but definitely driving the coast is an experience of a lifetime! Happy travels!
There are several options including
- Private transfer Naples Airport to Positano about 110 Euros for two passengers. Ravello would cost more as it's further along the coast. A couple of company's that get good reviews, you can ask for quotes.

- Airport Bus to Sorrento then local bus onwards. Pay the driver on the airport bus. Buy tickets from the Tabacchi shop at the station before you board the local bus.

As above but with private transfer onwards to Positano or Ravello rather than bus.
Bus/taxi from airport to Naples railway station and take the local train to Sorrento then onwards as one of the above. If you take a taxi at Naples airport agree the fare before you get in, there are set fares for certain journeys but you have to agree them before you set off. The taxi driver is supposed to have a schedule to show you the fares.
Whatever you decide to do, do NOT take a taxi off the rank in Sorrento, you will pay through the nose. I speak from bitter experience!
I forgot, there is another option
Bus/taxi airport to Naples ferry port then ferry to Positano. Timetable below but don't trust the start date too much, they started late last year.
The services are subject to cancellation if it is a bit choppy.
