Driving Day from Sorrento to Florence

We will be driving from Sorrento to Florence on Thursday, July 3rd, 2008. We're trying to figure out how to spend the day, doing some justice to Tuscany. But, there is so much to see and very little time in which to do it.

We're considering taking the highway until Siena, spending a little time in Siena, then taking the "Chianti Highway", SR222, to Florence, and stopping anywhere enticing.

Any specific ideas and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

From Sorrento->Naples->Rome->Florence is easily serviced by trains. Excluding Sorrento->Naples, you can ride the high-speed EuroStar trains all the way. I would definitely consider trains over a car because everyone can have a relaxed time on the train and see the scenery...instead of making the driver and navigator spend most of their time reading maps, reading highway signs, paying tolls and figuring out how to "not get lost". We've done it both ways and we won't ever rent another car.

Thanks for the feedback, but we will definitely have a car. While driving can be nervewracking at times, it also allows us to be more spontaneous than taking trains. And, we're a family of 5, travelling for 3.5 weeks, so we have a lot of stuff to haul around (although, we'll certainly be packing as lightly as possible).

Also, our hotel in Florence, Hotel David, has its own private car park, so we're all set there.
