Driving Colle Val D'Elsa (outside Florence to Sorrento)...stop in Pompeii?

We have a rental car in Colle Val D'Elsa and will drive down to Sorrento where we will drop the car off at Hertz. A few questions:

Do the rental car companies typically charge for an extra driver (my wife)? I have an international drivers license but was thinking my wife maybe should get one too?

If we have time, we were thinking we could try and stop at Pompeii along the way. How is the parking around there? Would it be safe to leave our luggage in the car (somewhat hidden) or should we check it at the front entrance of Pompeii?

So far all the car rental companies I used in Italy charged extra for the additional driver, even if it's your spouse (unlike here in California where state law prohibits car rental companies from charging extra for the additional driver if he or she is the spouse).

Don't remember about parking in Pompeii. I used the Circumvesuviana the couple of times I went.

If your wife will be driving she will be required to have a current IDP - Permit, not License. The International Drivers License is an online scam, the IDP is what is needed.

Somewhat hidden is somewhat of an invitation.
