We are traveling to Italy with our 3 teenagers and driving from Venice to Chiusaforte for the day. Chiusaforte is the birthplace of their great grandfather, so we must go there for at least a few hours. It looks like a 2 hour drive from Venice. Any advice from someone who has been in the area. It's in the province of Udine close to the Slovenia and Austrian borders.
It's just a 100 mile, 2 hour trip up the coast. Chiusaforte is in the far northeast corner of Italy--in the mountains.
If you pickup your car close to the train station in Venice, be careful driving on the causeway going back over to the mainland. They have radar cameras hammering anyone that drives over the speed limit of about 35 mph.
Udine is another interesting city dating back to the Roman times. The city is a circle, and it was built for chariots (I assume.) People park all over the sidewalks, etc. in tiny cars. We had a hard time finding anywhere to eat one Sunday night. But bars and gelatini places were everywhere. You also won't be very far from Trieste at the top of the Adriatic--a scenic place.
Thank you David for the overview and especially for the heads up on the causeway out of Venice! We're looking forward to seeing where my husband's family is from and showing the kids Italy for the first time.
