Driving between Florence and Venice

We plan on taking the Main Freeways between Florence and Venice (A1 to A13 to A4). My question is are these toll roads? If so, how often are the toll booths, approximatley how much is the toll each time and do we need to have correct change, or are there toll operators?

Thanks

You will only have to pay a toll when you get off the highway. You take a ticket from a machine when you get on the highway. There are AutoGrills and gas stations on the highway so you won't have to get on and off the toll roads to do those things. Seems like it costs around 18-24 euro. I'm not sure exactly. There is a real live human cashier at the toll booths where you pay. You don't need exact change. My Italian friend uses tolls to break big bills (paying a 3 euro toll with a 50 euro bill) or to get rid of her change. Whatever money you have (even Visa) they will take. Just don't lose the ticket you got when you got on the highway.

John from Dallas is incorrect. When driving from Florence to Venice, you will only pay the toll once--in Venice. The toll roads are connected, so you don't have to pay unless you get off the highway.
And I always, always pay in cash. I just don't trust the toll people with my credit card.

You can also use the "Carta" lanes and pay with your credit card - very fast and easy.

The Autostradas are all toll roads. You take a ticket when you enter the Autostrada and pay as you leave it. Since you will be traveling on more than one, you will have to repeat for each one. I wouldn't bother to try to use cash. You won't know what your tolls are ahead of time and who wants to carry that much coinage around and fumble for the right amount? It is easier if you use the "Carta" lane and use your Visa/MC. When you pay, you will insert your ticket into the slot and then you will slip your Visa/MC into the very same slot. It took me a couple of minutes to figure that one out! The "Carta" lanes are so much quicker.
