I'm flying to Palermo and driving from there to Santa Stefano Quisquina, Agrigento Province, in July. My flight originally landed at 1630, but has been changed to 1820, which means by the time I get a car and am on the road I won't make my destination until after dark. Does anyone have any experience driving the back roads of Sicily in the dark? I have driven in Italy and have been in Sicily, but without a car.
Where are you flying from?
If an overnight flight the smart thing to do is stay in Palemo on arrival and head to your destination in the am.
We drove backroads in Sicily. I would not do it at night.
I'm flying from Geneva. I am considering staying near the airport and taking off in the morning.
Apart from the valid points Christine noted, the good news is sunset isn't until ~ 830PM and not totally dark til a sometime past 9PM.
How well do you do at home driving in the dark on unlit 2 lane roads for the 1st time?
Another issue - if your flight is delayed will the rental agency still be open?
I drive without any problem at night on a two-lane road. Sunset predicted for Santo Stefano Quisquina is at 2017, on 28 July.
As I remember, much of the drive will be on highways, not small roads.
I would not have aa problem driving that route at night, and if you land on time, most of the drive will take place while it still light. It's only an hour and a half drive.
Thanks for the concern ChristineH. Rental agency is open until midnight.
Thanks everybody! I appreciate the information! It's all helpful.
