Driving at Night through Tuscany

It is difficult to drive at night through Tuscany since it is out in the country with little city or street lights?

First, I'm going to chide my fellow posters for their less than helpful replies above. I think that how difficult night driving in Tuscany is depends on just where you are. There are some parts with hilly, winding roads where, at the very least, it would behoove you to drive quite slowly, be very careful, and not indulge in very much wine with your dinner. It's a consideration when choosing a place to stay. If you are planning to enjoy the pleasures of Tuscan wine, you might have to forego country seclusion; unless the place you stay provides dinners.

I see no difference between driving at night in Tuscany, where I used to live, and driving at night in California, where I live now. The night is just as dark in both places.

Thank you all for your comments and input. The reason I asked this question is that from the pictures of the landscape it looks like country roads here where I live and if you are not familiar with those roads or if signs are not clear, it's pretty easy to get lost since there are no lights. I'm sure we'll be fine plus we plan on using either the Google mobile app or Michelin. Thanks everyone.

Roberto,

is your sky in the Bay Area just as dark as that in rural Toscana. Can you see all the stars?

The wine with dinner question raised above is irrelevant to night driving.

The drink drive laws and penalties are much tighter in Europe and Italy in particular than many other places. The driver should not be drinking - day or night.

Apart from the few highways and motorways, most Tuscan roads follow ancient routes and are very curvy and very hilly. Getting lost is not a concern - every crossing is well signaled - but driving by night may be difficult and tiring. - Even driving by daylight may be tiring on long stretches.

I would suggest taking a good GPS (that you're familiar with before you get to Italy). It's not very difficult to drive in Tuscany but I understand your concern regarding driving at night, however with the aid of a good GPS, I would not worry.
