Actually public transportation works perfectly, safely and comfortably. Bus schedules are regular to Posiano, Amalfi and Ravello alongthe coast road, you can also go along the coast by boat. Xtra nice and scenic. do ont forget Capri via hydrofoil from Naples or Sorrento.

I would not advise renting a car on the amalfi coast...it's too hard to park, and if you can, it will cost you a fortune. My experience with the buses has not been greet either, I have found them to be infrequent and overcrowded (this may depend on time of year). They say a good option is a scooter, although I was too scared to attempt driving one on those roads.
See how you go with buses, you could always rent a car while there, no?

We like to hire a private driver for the day to tour the Amalfi Coast for a day. Runs about 200 - 250 euros for 8 hours. Split 4 ways it's a nice splurge.
