You want an “International Driving Permit,” (IDP), which you can obtain at your local AAA office (assuming you’re in the USA). You’ll need 2 passport-sized photos, or they can take the photos there, when you apply. It costs $15 for the permit (photos extra charge), and it’s good for a year. It’s not a license, or really even a “permit,” but it translates the info on your US state drivers license into several non-English languages, to make it easier for a non-English speaking cop to interpret your name, birthdate, etc. Of course, if you never get pulled over, you won’t really need it (sort of like saying you’re not guilty unless you get caught), but it’s legally required, and if you get caught without it you’ll regret it. The folded permit is larger than your passport, so it may not fit as easily in your money belt (you do have one of those, right?), but better to have the IDP and never show it, than to need to show it and not have it. Happy motoring— don’t let the tailgaters intimidate you.
