after 3 nights in cinque terre with no car, i will be spending a week outside san gimignano, where i will definitely have one. i was trying to decide whether it would be better to take the train from cinque terre and pick up the rental somewhere down near san g or if i should pick it up near cinque terre and drive down.
has anyone ever taken that drive? any tips/suggestions would be MUCH appreciated!

We just made that drive in May. Rented a car at Milan airport and drove 3 weeks, ending in Rome. We enjoyed the drive from CT down to Lucca, Pisa, Volterra, and San Gimignano (then on to Siena). Lovely. Lunch (pizza) in main piazza in Lucca, quick stop at Leaning Tower, alabaster shopping in Volterra, and unforgettable hearty Tuscan dinner at Chiribiri in San Gimignano. Maybe you could take the train to La Spezia, rent the car; then follow this fun route? Best to have all rentals arranged in advance from US. Very expensive otherwise.
