Drive to Rome from Florence?

Hi,

In March, my husband, son and I are heading to see our daughter who is studying in Florence. We arrive in Rome, spend 4 days, then Florence for 4 days (with a day trip in there). My question is for our trip back to catch our flight home: does it make sense to rent a car in Florence to drive back to Rome and meander through Tuscany so we have the flexibility to explore? Or does a train make more sense, perhaps stopping and storing luggage at the train station to explore a town like Siena? We have a hotel that night near the airport in Rome for our flight back the next day.
thanks in advance travel lovers!

It’s up to you but unless you drive through Tuscany in a couple of days you don’t have much time.

The high speed Frecciarossa train journey is only 90 minutes to Roma Termini (Rome’s main station) then another 32 minutes on the Leonardo Express train to the airport. If you drive the A1 freeway it will take you at least 3.5 hours. If you pass through Siena it will be well over 4 hours, and that is assuming you stay on the freeways and make zero pit stops. So if you want to do it in a day, and maybe take the SR2 Highway (slower two lane winding road), you won’t have much time to see anything. If you plan to make your way to Rome in at least couple of days, then it will make more sense.
