Drive time from Pienza to Sorrento

We want to drive from Pienza to Sorrento. Should we drive to outskirts of Rome to drop off our car and then take a train to Sorrento? or is it shorter to drive straight to Sorrento to drop off our car?

What is best route for any of this?

Drop the car in Sorrento.

Realistically, it will take 5-5 1/2 hrs not including stops. Good thing is no changing trains and you only move your luggage when you arrive in Sorrento.

Agree with gerri.
Drive to Sorrento (long but easy drive, nearly all on a freeway) and drop the car in Sorrento unless you want to keep it for later, if you need it.
Make pit stops at the Autogrill rest stops on the freeway. Great food. There are several every so many miles. Look for signs to AREA DI SERVIZIO.
For the Sorrento area itself, a car is not needed, buses, trains, and ferries will do. However it depends on what your plans are later after Sorrento.
