I will be travelling late March/early April with my family 2 adults/2 kids (ages 9 and 12). We will be getting a rental car in Rome and driving to an Agritursimo about an hour south of Florence. We had planned a quick day trip to Florence, then driving to Verona for the night before continuing to Venice. I've done this drive before, but now we're contemplating dropping off our car in Florence and taking the train to Verona. Is there a way to park our car near the train station so we can keep our bags in the car and not have to deal with them while in Florence? Then drop off the car before hopping a train to Verona? I'm concerned with the ZTL. Please advise.
Drop the car then store your luggage at one of the many facilities near the station
Trains are faster and easier from Florence to Verona and then onto Venice than driving so I support dropping the car in Florence and then proceeding by train. There are rental locations in town and at the airport. Airport is easier and less worries about ZTLs but you'll need to take the tram from the airport to near the train station, stash your bags at a facility and then enjoy Florence. Return to get your bags, go to the train station to train into Verona.
I like Verona but if you are only staying one night you might consider staying Florence and then heading to Venice from there. I don't know how much of Verona you'll see coming in late and then having to check out the next day and go onto Venice.
Pay attention to rental car return hours - especially on weekends - and the hours of the storage place.
Never leave your luggage in a parked rental car.
Have a great trip,
