Hello! We will be taking our first trip to Italy in late Sept. and are renting a car for our 5 days in Tuscany. We are looking into taking a pasta making class in Bologna one of those days. Would you recommend we drive to Bologna or take the train? Thanks in advance for your help.
A lot would depend on where the class is in Bologna. If it's in some villa on the Bologna hills or outside the city center, I would probably drive. The drive from Siena to Bologna is less than 2 hours. If it's in the city center of Bologna, the train is an option. You would need to get to Florence Santa Maria Novella station first (by bus, train or even drive), which takes about 80-90 min. by bus or train or about one hour if you drive. At Florence SMN you would change to a Freccia train which takes 37 min. to reach Bologna Centrale.
You won't want to drive into central Bologna - there is a large dreaded ZTL in Bologna which will cost you a lot of money if you violate it. The motorway between Florence and Bologna is through the mountains and winds a lot and has plenty of tunnels.
