drive or train from Assisi or Siena to Rome Airport?

We are going to Italy over Christmas. The first part of our trip will be in Rome, then we are going to Tuscany for the second part. Probably will end up in Assisi or Siena for New Year's.

All of us are flying out of Rome, one if us has a morning flight at 10:30am on Jan 2, and the rest are flying on the morning of Jan 3. We don't want to stay in Rome for an extra night so we were thinking of driving to the airport from Tuscany the morning of Jan 2, dropping off our friend and then also dropping off our rental car and taking a taxi back to the city for our last night.

Is this a good idea or would we be better off just leaving the car in Siena or Assisi and taking a train early in the morning to the airport? Looks like Assisi is about 2.25 hour drive from Rome, and if our friend needs to leave at 10:30, we should be there at 8:30, so we'd leave at 5am if we were driving.

Any suggestions?

If you have a flight out of Terminal #5 back to the U.S. at Rome-FCO, you should be at the airport beginning your security checks 2.5hrs-3.0hrs before your flight. It is often less but depending on schedules, Terminal #5 can be a zoo.

Next, it's a 3.0hr drive from Assisi to Rome-FCO and 3.5hrs from Siena. Then, you have to turn in the rental car and get yourself to the terminal. That puts you on the road at 5:00am or earlier. You can do this but you just have to be aware of the travel and check-in times.

You won't make it on the train. First bua/train out of Assisi is 05:01. You will arrive about 08:30 at the airport train station in front of terminal C. That's pushing it. From Siena, the first bus/train departs at 05:45. You will arrive about 09:15.
