Drive or take the train from Assisi to Rome?

I've rented a car for exploring Umbria in mid-June. I am staying in Assisi and was planning to return the car in Perugia the day before heading to Salerno by train. Thus far, the only train I found on the Trenitalia website is a local train with a connection in Rome that leaves Assisi at 7:00 a.m., which is a bit early for me. Is it possible that the local train schedules for summer are not posted? I am hesitant to drive and attempt to navigate returning a car in Rome. Does anyone have experience here to provide some advice?

Thank you!

The local train schedules are not posted. They will update June 10.

In the meantime, check a day within the next week that corresponds with the day of travel to see the probable schedule.

Laurel -- thanks for the quick reply. I had done that when I was first planning my trip and saw a train that left Assisi around 11 in the morning. I figured that would be the same schedule in June and searched the RS Travel Forum to see that other travelers had discussed taking an 11 am train to Rome in prior years. I was hoping that the schedule just isn't up so I will hold out for a bit longer. Thanks again!!

Laurel - just as you suggested, I checked for next week and see NUMEROUS trains to Salerno at more civilized times in the morning, including the one I saw when I was initially planning my trip.

Most trains from Assisi to Rome require a change in Foligno. If you rent from Europcar, you could return the car in Foligno. If you rent from Hertz, you could return it in Spoleto or Terni, which are also along the same Ancona-Foligno-Rome line. No need to back track to Perugia.

Thanks for the suggestion, Roberto. I will check with Hertz about the return location, but I was planning to visit Perugia the day we return the car and then take the train back to Assisi.
