Drive from Rome to Amalfi Coast

Hello,

Was wondering what is the most efficient way to get to the Amalfi Coast from Rome in August. We will have a rental car but I've heard the traffic is terrible and parking is very bad in August. Any other suggestions?

Skip rental car. Train to Salerno, ferry to AC.
Are you open to other places or did you ave your heart set on the AC? Anywhere will be crowded in August, but at least oter coastlines won't have the transport pressures and intl crowds.

I cannot think of a worse place in August except Rome itself. At least in Rome in August it would be easier to drive because so many Italians are at the beach. Would you be willing to go inland? Umbria has hills and lush greenness and the mountains are actually comfortable.
