We are driving through southern Italy for a few weeks. Our last stop is Lecce (three days there), then we have two days to drive back to Rome. We will have spent time in Naples, Amalfi and Cilento coasts, Matera and Locorotondo, so we are looking to take our time driving back to Rome to catch a flight. Any suggestions? My only thought so far is north side of Gargano Peninsula, or heading to Caserta. Thanks for any suggestions!
How about Castel del Monte (near Andria)? Great restaurant down the road, Madre Terra.
I've visited the Gargano Peninsula twice, albeit briefly on both occasions, and thought it was very pretty. Not a bad choice, but sort of out of your way. ViaMichelin says the straight-shot drive from Lecce to Rome is over 7 hours, and it's estimates are generally considered optimistic.
There are many picturesque towns in Puglia; I'm not clear on how many days you have already allotted to that area. If it's only 3 or 4 days, I'd spend the excess day there, seeing another 2 or 3 towns.
Just watched a show called Magnifica Italia on TLN here in Canada and the town of Taranto looked interesting and it is on your way back to Rome. We will be driving thru it after visiting Matera on our way to Lecce in May next year. We are considering a stop here as well.
