Does anyone have experience driving over the mountains from La Spezia to Polinago? AI does not recommend and advises us to go to Florence and drive from there.

AI is garbage. Most of the time doesn't know what he/she/it is talking about.
If you are talking about Polinago in the province of Modena, you would go through the Cerreto Pass, after Aulla and Fivizzano.
It's a curvy highway, but the shortest way to get there from La Spezia.
If you don't like curves, you can take the A15 freeway from La Spezia to Parma, then the A1 freeway down to Modena and go from Modena through Sassuolo and the Secchia valley. It's curvy in the last portion, to reach Polinago, but not as much. It's much longer in miles however (like 50-60 miles longer), however, being largely freeway, you can drive fast, so the travel time is similar.
