drive from Amalfi to Messina

How long a drive is it from Amalfi to Messina? Of course I understand, you have to take a ferry to Messina. Are there good roads, x way? Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

It's probably close to 5 hours' drive just to get to the Ferry dock. The first 20+ kms to Salerno is the famous very scenic (and very curvy and kind of narrow) two lane highway along the Amalfi coast. The rest of the trip is all 4 to 6 lane freeway.

Drove that area a couple years ago. A3 is pretty good road but at the time there was alot of roadwork going on but the autostrada tends to be less travelled in southern Italia so never really hit any snags. Get a ferry ticket before you get into Villa San Giovanne. Will save you time/frustration at the dock.

Once you reach the highway (A3) you are good to go. There are still some minor roadworks (they are rebuilding the whole freeway, making it wider and straighter), but nothing to be worried about except on weekends between mid-July and mid-August where there might be some serious congestion at work sites. The ferry crosses the strait in less than 20 minutes, it actually takes more time to embark/disembark.
