Drive by Pisa

Hello,

Is it a possible to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa from A12? Because of all the advice about not parking around there or driving within the walls, we would maybe like to just drive by and see it and avoid the hassle. :)

Where are the walls? Are they just around the Field of Miracles, or farther out in the town?

According to the maps, I see what looks like a street called Via Contessa Matilde. Is that a street for cars? Can we easily drive our rental car to it and see the tower from that street?

I couldn't find a picture of where the parking lot is that is close to the Field. Is it possible for me and my husband to take turns staying in the parking lot with our car, while the other walks around the outside grounds of the tower? I ask this because we would not want to leave our rental car, especially with suitcases in it. This is due to the other advice this site has given, and I am not wanting to take the time to leave our luggage at the train station, nor at a hotel...which are great ideas by the way. I am just weighing my options first.

Another idea would be to leave our car in a parking lot of a restaurant and walk a few blocks to the tower? Is that a safe possibility for our car and suitcases?

Thank you,
Sandy

I have been to Pisa twice.
The first time was in 1990 when we lived in Germany. I drove down to Italy in our car and we managed to find the Leaning Tower on our own without a GPS. It wasn't easy, but wasn't awful. Nowdays you have GPS or nav systems. Parking in the area around the area has very little parking. We parked about half a mile from there and didn't leave anything visible in the car from the outside.
I would not want to drive in Italy today, with all the traffic zones and new rules. Getting an expensive ticket is so easy. Find a tour, take the trains.
