Drinking water from the fountains

Is water safe to drink from the open water fountains in Roma, and other cities?

Take a water bottle with ya, or buy 1 bottle of water and just keep filling it up at any fountain you see. We go to Venice atleast once a year for up to 3 weeks and refill our bottles whenever they get empty with the fresh cold water. We have been doing this now for the past 11 years and have had NO PROBLEMS... Its some of the best water we have had... We do this in whatever city we visit....Enjoy your trip and the water

I drank from all the fountains I encountered, except the Trevi (just too many people with hands in the water, and no access to flowing water)

I brought a water bottle with me (Nalgene) I don't believe in using any plastic bottles at all...so I filled my bottle when I needed all around Rome. never got sick, not one little bit!

I filled my bottle on a bike trip in Sicily as well.We were out in the country and only saw "cow troughs" As long as you see no sign that says "non potable" you are fine..... I always fill from a flowing water source, not from still water...

It's not true that you can drink water from any fountain you see. Some of them have little signs that say "acqua non potabile" which means it's not fit to drink. But other than those, yeah, they're perfectly safe to drink from.

Hi Larry. No problems in Rome. We did the same thing as Ellen...brought our Nalgene bottles from home & re-filled them often! There are water spouts all over the city and you will see everyone filling their water bottles! Have a great trip.

Larry,

In most cases, the water from the fountains is perfectly safe, and good! However, if you see a fountain with a sign stating "Acqua non Potabile", that means it's not suitable for human consumption.

Cheers!

Odds are better that you will get something from sipping off a pop top can of soda. God knows what thats been exposed to and how many rats have run across it while in a warehouse.

Seriously. When and if I see a fountain surrounded by dead bodies all holding refillable containers, then, I will not drink from that fountain.
