Dressing for dinner

Are dressy cotton pants and sweater sets ok for dinner or do women tend to wear more dresses or skirts ? Thanks for your advice !

We generally ate at moderate restaurants. Call it 40-60 euro for dinner for two. Being winter, I wore black slacks & a sweater. Dad wore a button down shirt & jeans. Never had a problem.

I'd only wear a dress or skirt if that was my preferred style of dress or if I were going someplace extremely high end.

I'll be in Rome, Floence and Venice - won't be dining at McDonalds or ultra high end !

You don't say when you are going, but my experience in Italy is limited to two summer visits, and both times it was roasting( like 100 degrees!) hot. I wore sundresses and casual skirts almost the whole time, cooler then pants or even capris, but nicer looking then shorts( and easier to get past dress code police at churches as long as knee length)
