Dresses, hemlines and knees

I have last found a perfect travel dress for me. It has cap sleeves , high neckline, but its hem length when I am standing, falls just on the bottom edge of the kneecap. Women will understand that when you move the length of the dress shifts and the hemline might rise to the middle or top edge of the kneecap . In all the years of traveling in Europe, I’ve seldom brought a skirt or a dress, but they were all more like four or 5 inches below the knee so this question is a new one for me. I have no problem conforming to the rules, but don’t want to be turned away for something avoidable. The dress will be perfect for the warm weather in Italy, and quick dry washable but I can only allow myself one dress in the carry-on. I am a senior and borderline petite

Should I bring the dress or leave it behind?

I’m pretty sure that the nun bouncers at the door will pull out their rulers to measure your knees!

Just kidding. You’ll be fine. I think that the church will be more worried about others.

I find dresses more comfortable in extreme hot weather and this sounds like it will suit your needs well.

@ Katy

With nice knees you and your dress have an open invitation to a BBQ at my house during summer.

You want to be sure to enter any church? Cover shoulders and knees: https://images.app.goo.gl/cdC2a8a8fm1Bje4b7.

Otherwise any grumpy guy paid by the Vatican State to stay at the door will have the right to turn you away.

In summer, 9 times out of 10 they will let you in. On the other hand, I'd never run the risk of letting some guy at a door decide what I am going to see during my journeys. Of course we all have different priorities.

Maybe you could add a panel of material, lace or a frill to the bottom of the dress to give you a few more inches?

The only few minutes it might matter is in strict churches. Find a scarf or hunk of light fabric that can wrap around your waist and is slightly longer than your skirt...then if the fashion police ask, you can employ it. A large, lightweight shawl or scarf should be a mainstay in any woman's travel wardrobe for covering knees, shoulders, as a beach cover up tied strapless sarong style. But it can still roll up small for a purse. (I have used one as a sunshade and a sling when needed.)

So your knees are covered. It's not going to matter if some is exposed when you move. Honestly, I cannot imagine you will be denied entrance when you're clearly following the rules. LOL, given what I've seen admitted to some of the churches, you'll be fine.

Thanks to all for your thoughtful input. A small concern but the feedback helps. @ Ron, if my knees were 20 years younger I would accept the invite :-)

@mcollencruz - i found the dress at Talbots. Haven’t shopped there in years, but somehow a catalog landed in my mailbox. I guess I’ve done too much online ordering in the last two or three years! I am on new mailing lists—LOL. Go to talbots.com. search using the phrase “lightweight stretch“. (T forTalbots line) There are two styles of dresses almost the same but slight differences in the cap sleeve and then the pocket they come in prints and solid colors. They also come in regular and in petite for me I bought one print in petite and a solid color in regular . Right now some if not all are on sale for 40% off. I kept a print and a solid with the slash pocket as it is better for me than an inseam pocket . Not the finest tailoring, but good enough for travel in a carry-on . This is more detail than most want to know, but for those who are looking may find it helpful. Good luck.

Was just in Rome and they were letting EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE in. We saw women in mini skirts and all kinds of dress that we thought was supposed to be inappropriate. My daughter and I spent a long time trying to find appropriate dresses, she ended up buying a shawl as soon as we got to Rome and wore it around (even as a make shift skirt) because she was trying to hard to be respectful - but other people were not and no one seemed to care.
