Dress for dance clubs - Rome

Taking 3 kids 18, 19 and 21 to Rome - and then traveling by car for 2 weeks. The nightclubs all say dress to impress. Because we need to fit luggage in the car they can only take a carry-on so have to limit what they pack and going for multi-purpose items. Packing a dress outfit for one night is a lot of space in the suitcase that needs to work for 2 weeks! additional pair of shoes slacks shirt etc. for male. Anyone been lately that can share the dress code - and perhaps recommend where to go. Can a nice pair of jeans work?

Thanks!

Rome has become casual. With that, I mean yes, nice jeans and a "dressy top" is good.

You can never go wrong with a black dress - knee length, swing length, straight length. Of course, something you don't need to iron and can wash and drip dry withing a couple of days.

You can make it a "different dress" for each club or restaurant you may go to - accessorizing is key. Oh, and Italian guys usually pair a nice shirt or a nice, tight-fitting tee with a jacket and jeans or casual slacks, and a nice watch, pointy shoes. But, also, a lot of them wear jeans and a casual button down shirt.

A couple of funny stories - I was walking to Piazza Navona one day. I cut down this little side street - there was a woman all decked out, I mean decked out - she was attractive - had high, high heels on that she was "tip toeing" over cobblestones! Oh my!

A turtle could have out run her. lol. One Italian gentleman stopped her and I caught a teeny glimpse of what he was saying, but as he pointed to the shoes and some subtle hand gestures, well, you get the picture...she just smiled and slowly moved on...

When I was at my fav restaurant, there was an Italian woman who came in with a white short fur coat, white jeans or pants, and a sparkling gold, glitter top, and jewelry that Mr. T would envy, lol.

Thanks Girasole. My nephew is the one I was most curious about - the girls can pack a dress and strappy shoe without much space - but dress shoes, jacket etc for him just won't fit in the luggage. The jeans and casual button down shirt is perfect. I did not want them to be in line at a night club and the girls get in but he doesn't because he isn't looking up to par! (and have already told them wear a nice pair of jeans and their hiking shoes on plane as they take the most space in luggage. Moving between four cities and fitting 4 peoples luggage in the car each time just won't accommodate larger suitcases.

You are welcome, Christine.

For sure, your nephew can wear jeans, a nice button down or even a form fitting tee like a lot of young Italian men I have seen. Young men sometimes wear a nice loafer - soft or leather. Some wear a nice tennis shoe.

Ah yes, the younger Italians wear form-fitting and tighter clothing. Even teen girls wear tighter jeans and a dressy top with nice canvas or other tie shoes.

One day, I saw this Italian woman with beautiful, leather tie loafers. She had on skinny ankle pants. I so wanted to stop her and ask her where to buy those shoes! They were so pretty. *

Have fun!

As a woman, I love high heels, but as you may know, Rome is filled with cobblestones - a strappy, flatter-heeled sandal or shoe, low heel or wedges will work okay.

Oh, and at night? Campo de Fiori is a lively, place - street musicians can be found hanging around Giordano Bruno's statue. Nice little bars for a drink or so. https://www.skylinewebcams.com/en/webcam/italia/lazio.html There are a lot of little eateries off the Piazza - cute shops and restaurants.

Try the Monti area https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4XCIANUSXc&list=PLCfvgNst-g0nGOepompjoefrsA_qJm-70

And, the ever popular Trastevere. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v75H2alRIW4&list=PLCfvgNst-g0nGOepompjoefrsA_qJm-70

Piazza Navona is beautiful!

A club in Rome (or SF) for a male your nephew’s age would not be slacks, dress shirt, dress shoes. It would be the hippest, chic-est jeans (Diesel is one example), hip/cool tshirt, hip/cool shoes (oxfords or very stylsh tennis shoes - what you see millennials wearing). Rome is very high fashion, just tell him to wear what hip, cool millennials here wear.
And he can wear this throughout the trip, so bringing 1 pair of hip/cool jeans, 1 hip/cool tshirt, and fashionable tennies don’t take up room for just one night out.

Ha ha Christine,

Sort of playing off Susan's suggestions - I just thought of this! A fun watch! And, this guy is very Italian :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azC0iZrYZts The young man at the beginning is featured throughout the video, lol. But, it gives you an idea of what young guys may be wearing

If your son is going to wear shorts, by no means should he wear visible socks with them. And you can't go wrong in Rome with a lot of black.
