We are leaving for Italy in May. I was planning on packing only dresses and only one nice pair of jeans. My dresses are short sleeved and fall at or below the knee. Several are high low: fall at or below knee in front and mid calf in the back. They are made by LuLaroe. I may or may not wear leggings with them depending on the weather. Acceptable or garish?
With the relevant exception of churches, nobody cares how the millionth tourist of the day dresses.
If you want to visit any Church, to show respect for their beliefs and you also want to be 100% sure they will let you enter, you must fully cover knees and shoulders. How you will achieve this result doesn't matter, it's about modesty.
Even if it's the last "room" of the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel is a church.
I've never worn a dress in Italy and never would (dresses are not my thing). As long as your shoulders and knees are covered for the churches which generally require it, you'll be good.
Should be fine. Shoulders and knees covered is the rule in churches, everywhere else there are no rules. A short sleeve top is fine everywhere. Leggings or longer skirts cover the knee.
A very strict enforcement could mean that “at the knee” is not 100% “covering the knee”. Knee length dresses are fine in my experience, but If you are worried maybe have leggings in your bag just in case. Or a big scarf to wear as a sarong if needed.
In summer I pretty much live in dresses so I think this is a fine plan
Thanks everyone. I appreciate your helpful comments.
I would venture to guess you might feel out of place in those outfits. The ones I've seen are a bit garish (bright colorful prints, patterns) so you would stand out as a tourist which bothers some folks.
I would suggest wearing the leggings with them. Its a nice compromise as its covered up. They look comfortable with the leggings and should work for the weather in May.
Maddie thanks for your comment. My dresses are solid in color: green, brown and pale blue. No neons!! My other two dresses have black and navy backgrounds with very small subtle prints. I changed my mind and will bring leggings..solid navy and black. I have a feeling that no matter what we do we'll look like tourists because that's what we are :) I just don't want what I'm wearing to be disrespectful.
I’m assuming that thigh chafing is not an issue for you? I made a mistake once in NYC years ago. Absolutely horrible. I now always wear pants or shorts.
“LuLaRoe was little more than a scam, a Washington State lawsuit claims” -
No I do not sell clothes or anything. I am a retired RN with a minimal wardrobe because I only wore scrubs 5 days a week. I am 67 years old and I hate going to the mall to shop so whatever I buy I try to get online. If one type of thing fits I buy several of the same thing in a different color. Same with shoes. This is the most special trip of my lifetime and I am very anxious about what to bring. I thought jeans wouldn't be respectful enough going into churches, etc. so I bought a bunch of the same style, different color dresses. But now I am having second thoughts about it and that is why I posted on this forum. We will be gone for 2 weeks and I don't want to over-pack.
The dresses would be fine in most instances, unless it says 'covered knees'. Italy is less strict than some churches in Spain. Check St. Peter's website for a dress code. Do consider long leg panties for comfort (no compression required) and perhaps pack a pair of leggings into your purse in the event you need to cover knees, or wear them on that particular day.
Keep in mind jeans are as much a European mainstay as they are here. Traditionally on younger folks, but that is changing as well. So feel comfortable in your choices.
Some churches are stricter than others, and I HAVE seen improperly dressed visitors turned away from a few. Some keep a supply of unattractive wraps on hand for covering up overly exposed tourists.
As I tend to pop in and out of churches whenever they look interesting, I just dress daily for the standard covered-shoulders-and-knees rule. Anyway, these are just the Vatican's dress rules:
Entry to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica
and the Vatican Gardens is permitted only to appropriately dressed
visitors.Low cut or sleeveless clothing, shorts, miniskirts and hats
are not allowed.
I was in Italy in late May, early June last year with my friends and family and all the women wore dresses for at least part of the time and we did not feel out of place. If you visit churches, many have dress codes, so you will need to cover your shoulders and knees. My niece who, like you brought one pair of jeans and the rest dresses, wore leggings for those occasions.

Stop worrying over what you are wearing. Don't let this concern stress you out while planning for your special trip.
I don't own any LuLaroe- just not my style! but I do have a friend who seems to have replaced her entire wardrobe with their pieces. I think she always looks very pulled together and very comfortable. If the dresses and leggings are what YOU will be comfortable in then wear them. Good grief they are just dresses and leggings! You will not look out of place or inappropriately dressed at all.
If you are also comfortable in jeans- then bring a pair if weather dictates. The whole world wears jeans and I doubt that you are talking about raggedy, worn styles anyway. When we travel in cooler weather I always bring jeans and wear them almost daily- they never show the dirt and never get wrinkled. We will be in Italy in May as well and I am bringing a pair of lighter weight jeans that can be cuffed so they can be worn long or like crop pants. I am 64 so- in your age range.
Just make sure your knees and shoulders are covered or can be covered for your church visits and you are good to go.
Also make sure your shoes are broken in and comfortable. Shoes can make or break a trip! I bring a pair of Dansko sneakers (They are sort of navy blue- not white), a black Skechers Mary Jane- very light weight- great to change into in the evening or also fine for day time walking cuz hey have a nice tread sole and a very soft lightweight grey Clarks loafer.
Ignore the naysayers above.
Have a fabulous time!
Thank you everyone. I appreciate your advice and encouragement! Happy and safe travels to all!
I like Rick's recommendation: "Don't show up looking like you're there to mow the lawn." So go with what you're comfortable with, while keeping in mind the restrictions at some churches.
Happy travels.
We visited in July when it was pretty hot. My friend and I had tank tops. When visiting churches (not attending mind you) they usually have a disposable shawl you can drape over your shoulders. It may/may not cost an extra nominal fee but otherwise we had no issues. Dress in whatever you are comfie in.
I Googled "Lularoe", and their outfits don't look a bit garish to me.
I thought jeans wouldn't be respectful enough going into churches,
Heck no. We've worn nothing BUT tidy jeans on our trips so far (England, Italy, Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands ) and haven't felt out of place anywhere (disclaimer: we don't eat at posh restaurants which might beg for fancier dress). We've seen jeans simply everywhere on both locals and tourists alike. It's skimpy attire that's the biggest no-no in Italian churches and church-owned attractions (e.g. Vatican Museums), and I'd draw the line on T-shirts with possibly offensive graphics or slogans as well, not that YOU have any intention of wearing any of those! :O)
Your pretty dresses and leggings will be just fine if that's what you'll be comfortable in. If jeans are normally your best friends, then you'll be fine in those too. I only mentioned earlier that I don't take frocks on vacation 'cause this tomboy doesn't wear them at home unless I absolutely must, therefore it would feel awkward and fussy to do so. That's not the case for women who wear them a lot. The point is to feel as much like yourself as possible, if that makes sense? I'm nearly 64 so in your life-stage group too.
Thanks to all the posters. I appreciate all of the suggestions and feedback!!
