Dress code in churches

Can women wear slacks to churches? What about a visit to the Vatican?

Yes, shoulders and knees must be covered - so no tank tops either! At St. Peter's after you clear the metal detectors, just before entering the basilica, you will be "inspected" for proper dress.

I saw on another web site (trip advisor, I think) that women's capri pants can be suspect.

I generally wear pants or a longer skirt - one below my knees - when I visit churches. Carol it's all about respect so modest dress is expected. Cover your shoulders too. Singlet tops, shorts and thongs would not be acceptable.

Thanks for the info. Sinlet tops etc. have been off my agenda for quite awhile. I come from the generation where mantillas were the go when hats went out in churches. Just wanted to know whether I should put a skirt in my case but that does not seem to be necessary. So thanks.

Capri pants are fine. A pretty scarf around the shoulders (or scrunched up in the bag) is always handy. I had a silk 'hoodie' in my bag for the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. Weighed nothing, folded into nothing, looked good and served the purpose of religious harmony.
