Sure, but as a male I personally would avoid the shorts but many wear them. But then I don't wear shorts during the day either - personal preference.

we were there at the start of the month, our second trip.( it was hot enough for us to wear shorts) we have eaten at various restarants.( non hotel) most of them I don't think they would really care. tourist spend money and some of them even tip, so thats pretty much what its about. so don't worry too much, if its hot.

It's a resort city. Unless you're going to a place over 100 Euros a person, no one cares. Designer shorts are certainly welcome at an expensive restaurant.

Agree as per usual with Tim/NJ. We visited Sorrento in March and virtually anything not ratty was fine. Saw no shorts as it was in the 40's & 50's temp-wise. Only caveat would be at the ritzy restaurants down by the marina, I'd dress a little nicer. But the places up near Piazza Tasso, in town, were decidedly casual. And very, very good, BTW.

Casual restaurants Burmuda length tailored ( not gym or board) shorts with a polo or button down will be fine. The real thing is, European men do not wear shorts unless they are playing a sport or ON the beach, but foreign tourists are given their own leeway in these areas.

What would you wear to dinner at a nice table clothed maitre d' hotel restaurant in your home town?
