Traveling to Pompeii from the United States in March. My Italian friend would like some dirt or even ash from Pompeii. Is it possible to put a small amount in a zip lock bag and fly home with it? If not, do they sell any?
No dirt or soil of any kind is allowed---it is a regulation to protect agriculture from pathogens.

However, a small quantity of pure mineral sand ( meaning no organic matter at all) may be allowed. It is possible that 100% volcanic ash, a pure mineral substance, could be allowed----if you can find it. In any case you would need to declare it when entering the US. The customs agent will ask to see it, and will decide then.
We had lots of volcanic ash in Washington after Mt. St. Helens erupted in 1980. But you could only scoop it up in measurable amounts for a few months in most areas, even where it fell heavily. I think the Pompei eruption was a bit longer ago.
I would look for a souvenir stand. Scooping up anything from an archeological site could be a big problem.
Thanks everyone
