Dorsoduro or Santa Croce hotel for first time in Venice?

Hi there. My husband and I will be in Venice next May. After much research we've narrowed our choice down to two great hotels. Both are off the beaten track and seem a great value to me . I know there's no wrong choice here!
Locanda San Barnaba in Dorsoduro- on a small canal near the Accademia bridge . Close to campo San Barnaba and campo Santa Margerita.
Al Ponte Mocenigo in Santa Croce near the St Sae vaporetto stop. Close to the restaurants in Carnereggio.
This is our first time in Venice and would love to hear any thought or comments you'd like to share. Thank you! Ellen

I don't know anything about Locanda San Barnaba, but we enjoyed Al Ponte Mocenigo very much. Owners were very nice and helpful, room was very clean and comfortable, and we liked the location. Cappucino was very good, also.

Have a great trip

Al Ponte Mocenegro is very highly rated but I don't understand the comment about proximity to restaurants in Cannaregio---you have to cross the Grand canal! by traghetto or vaporetto.

Another vote for Al Ponte Mocenigo. Stayed here (for a second time) a couple of nights this past August. Very convenient location: only about 4 vaporetto stops (3?) from the train station, and a FLAT walk off the vaporetto to the hotel - super for those of use pulling luggage. Clean, comfy, quiet room; very friendly, extremely helpful folks running it. Amazing breakfast, served outside in the lovely garden, if you like, during nice weather. About a ten minute walk to the Fish Market, Rialto Bridge area. So a great location from which to go off on a cicchetti evening tour, and then only have a few minutes walk back. It was recommended to me by the folks at Pensione Guerrato (one of Rick's favorites) several years ago, when P.G. was full, and I now much prefer it to P.G. (for one thing, the folks running it are much friendlier!) Would return to Al Ponte Mocenigo in a heartbeat, and hope to again in 2017!

I haven't stayed at either hotel, but the location of Locanda San Barnaba is the one I would prefer. You can walk (that is, climb) across the Rialto bridge (about 5-7 minutes walk from the hotel). You can hop on the vaporetto at Ca' Rezzonica on the Grand Canal or walk across the Dorsoduro (10 minutes) to Zattere for the vaporetto to Giudecca and San Giorgio. Very quiet at night.
