Don’t take sand from Sardinia!

A news report today concerns a French couple in serious trouble for trying to take home white sand from Sardinia.

Hauling home 90 lbs. is pretty brazen, but if there’s a really by-the-book security person screening you, make sure there’s no trace of sand stuck in your sandals, swimsuit, or hair!

Wow. 90 lbs of sand, in 14 bottles. Theft, pure and simple.

Just don't do stuff like that, and you will not have a problem.

I think you were just exaggerating for the sake of humour, at least I hope so. Why shouldn't security be by the book, and no, they aren't talking about a bit of sand inadvertently clinging to your clothing. But this isn't at all limited to Sardinia, nor with the large amount taken. It's against the law to remove anything from beaches in many parts of the world. But too many people think the rules don't apply to them and " what harm can a few shells and/ or a small bag of sand do?" But multiply that by thousands and thousands per year and the damage is obvious.

Yes, I was exaggerating. Someone could claim to be The Sandman, and that wouldn’t be an excuse, either. If a French person wanted sand to decorate their yard or garden, I’m sure Mr. Bricolage stores throughout France carry it, although it might not be as bright white as Sardinia’s.

If anyone wanted to remove something from a beach, bits of plastic and other detritus would be nice.

Interesting. A few years ago, some guys got busted for trying to remove buckets of sand from our beach in NJ. I think they said they were going to use it to make concrete.. Knuckleheads!!!

I saw this topic somewhere else today. There was a picture of at least 10 water/soda bottles full of sand. This WAS Brazen. It wasn't a little sandwich Ziploc of sand.

Hi, caldbunch. You’re right about the knuckleheads - since they were concrete-oriented, they might actually qualify for Blockheads!

Their concept is like going to Rocky Mountain National Park and figuring on scoring some free pine trees to accentuate their yard for some shade. With a big enough truck, they could even move 14,265 foot high Mt. Evans to New Jersey, but they might have to check with their municipality to make sure there’s not some height restriction law, as if they’d bother.

hey hey
totally amazed at what people "tourists" do and think they are intitled to. now call wolf and tears since the "sand patrol" want them to pay the price to face jail time for stupidity.
growing up on the big island of hawaii, happened so much.
taking "black" sand from black sand beach near kalapana, green sand "olivine crystals" from ka'u south point due to volcano eruptions after many years.
visitors come to the volcano taking lava rock away from madame pele "goddess of fire" sacred ground. lots of different legends in the world, our hawaiian legend is not to upset her. at the volcano visitor center under a glass and locked cabinet, are many letters, returned lava rock, plants that was taken. they didn't think it would hurt anyone, after returning home with it, felt that they had bad "juujuu" upon them and returned it. was not for you to take!! if it says "KAPU" stay out, no trepassing. so many deaths have happened with people climbing up or down cliffs, take a selfie, or great photo op.

Wow, that’s amazing, but sadly, not totally surprising. So KAPU, or otherwise it’s kaput ?

I’m redoing the landscaping in my backyard.
Anybody in this forum willing to come over to haul some of my backyard dirt home is welcome to come down and take a full truckload.
You can tell your friends it’s a souvenir from California.

I confess, I took some home from White Sands New Mexico. I rationalized it by saying I didn't deliberately take it out of the park. It was just the sand that was left in my shoes when I got to my car.
