Domus Aurea - closed again?

We had been planning on seeing this but now it seems like they stopped giving tours again? Anyone know for sure?

The website shows that "The Domus Aurea temporarily closes from 22 May to 22 June for the staging of the exhibition “The Beloved of Isis. Nero, the Domus Aurea and Egypt“.

https://colosseo.it/en/area/the-domus-aurea/

They don't appear to be selling tickets yet for dates beyond June 22, when they expect to be open again.

Thank you for the post. I will arrive in Rome tomorrow and I was going to try to go there. Guess I can forget about that one.

You're welcome. :O)
Bob, so sorry you'll have to miss it. Just one of many good reasons for a future return to Rome?

jlkelman, do keep checking back. I see that they are promising to be open many more days of the week than they have been!

Thanks for the heads-up on this! I just got tickets for our trip at the end of the month.

Ooohhhh, I am jealous! I loved visiting the Domus and it would be spectacular to see an exhibition in there! I’m glad you got tickets!

BTW, I walked there from my hotel using or trying to use CityMapper. I’d looked at the area on Google streetview ahead of time so realized I was being led to the wrong place. I later realized I should have put in “Domus Aurea Ingresso” to get me to the entrance instead of the park on top.

(Waving at Pam!)

I'm jealous too 'cause we've yet to be able to do Domus Aurea!
It's on the radar for a next time!

Thanks Pam for the info on the entrance. My two adult sons are accompanying me on this trip and are the ones going to the Domus as I have a Borghese ticket for that afternoon. I am a bit jealous but I didn’t make it to the Borghese on my last trip so it’s a priority for me on this trip. These is just so much to do in Rome. I’ll pass on the information about the ingresso.

@ SBOH , I actually did the Domus in the AM and the Borghese in the afternoon and walked between the 2! I enjoyed both which are really different! A couple of months ago someone started a thread on “Stendhal Syndrome”, a psychosomatic disorder brought on by viewing too much beauty, lol. I truly felt I was coming down with this after the Borghese! 🤩

Greetings fellow travelers.

I was just searching this topic and happened upon this post. Super excited to see it posted so recently and that two people mentioned they were planning to book for near future trips. I’m curious if anyone has a report to share as this is something I’m considering visiting on my upcoming trip - downside is, my days in Rome do not include the weekend (we arrive on a Monday and depart Friday AM) and it looks like my only option will be the tour that covers the exhibit, not the entire monument. So I’m interested in hearing if anyone did a weekday tour offered by coop here for the new exhibit, and if so, if it covered a good deal and maybe even touched on the ongoing excavation even though they are not granted access during the week. Prices look very reasonable and will offer a nice reprieve from the heat when we are visiting in August. I was actually surprised there are plenty of tickets still available.

Thanks in advance

Crystal

Crystal - we got back July 4th and did make it to the Domus and it was one of our top experiences in Rome! Our guide was fantastic and the tour was sooo interesting. The Egyptian exhibit is still worth seeing, though I'm assuming you won't get to see some of the other corridors etc...of the palace?? I actually don't know as the Egyptian artefacts were scattered throughout our tour. Worth a chance.

@jlkelman thank you for reporting back! So glad to hear, we ended up booking for the exhibit..even though we won’t see the entire monument it sounds like it will be worth it.

Hoping you will see this response for a couple more questions -
-Was it so cold inside that it called for long sleeves or a jacket?
-when purchasing tickets it indicates the price includes the tour of the monument /exhibit but says it excludes entrance to the site..I’m somewhat confused as this seems to suggest there may be some other ticket that needs to be purchased in addition?

I took the tour back in February or March. You'll want a warm layer. I was probably wearing a cotton turtleneck, a light fleece jacket and a waterproof windbreaker. There may have even been a light merino wool layer as well. I'm very cold-natured, and I wasn't cold. I had a morning tour, and the outdoor temperature hadn't warmed up much at that point--though I don't know how much difference that makes in the underground temperature.

Crystal B - you said you are going during the week, correct? So I'm not really sure about the tour vs entrance thing. In order to enter you had to have a tour, there is no going without one. We did it on a weekend though. I am a fairly warm person and had a tank top on and it felt refreshing to me as all through Sicily and in Rome it was very warm and humid while we were there. But, a light jacket or wrap would be in order if you are a normal temp. person.

We are traveling to Rome in mid-November and want to tour Domus Aurea. Checking Coop-Culture site tickets are not available after September 30. Is the site closing again after this date?

@ Alex in VA - according to the coop website, the current exhibit runs through January 2024 so likely they just haven’t released tickets beyond sept 30. When we purchased tickets for our trip this past august, we purchased two weeks in advance and all time slots were available, so I would guess you shouldn’t have issues securing tickets for November, just keep checking…
