After several trips to Rome, we’re finally going to be there on a Saturday for once. As the DA will be open that day (October 12) we definitely want to take advantage of it. Can anyone advise us on the best way to go - just buy a ticket online and walk in or go with Viator, Through Eternity, Roman Guy, etc.?
We bought tickets online and showed up at the appointed time. It was great!
Ooh, lucky you, Rich!
While so far we haven't been as fortunate timing-wise, I've never read that anyone was disappointed in the tour offered through the official website. Well, other than people who weren't really all that into excavations/history to being with, that is!
As all tours essentially are essentially the same length and include the virtual reality presentation, I don't personally see the need to pay twice the price or more to book through some of the indy tour sites for this one.
Do buy online in advance to be sure of getting your tickets!

This is the ordering page for the English tour:
Thanks, Kathy. Kinda what I thought.
walk in or go with Viator, Through Eternity, Roman Guy, etc.?
Only the archaeologists working at the Domus Aurea are allowed to take people around an active excavation site, I'm afraid all the above middle-men can only purchase tickets on the official site and re-sell them.
Dress warmly! It is cold in there!
We actually used a Through Eternity tour for this venue because by the time I learned about it, tickets were sold out. I know we paid more, but our Through Eternity guide was such a fabulous story teller that we considered it money well-spent. He could only describe was we were going to see, organize us for entry and then chat a bit afterwards, as the official site guide has to lead the tour. Whatever gets you in will be worth it.
Check the official website and get tickets as soon as they go on sale. Also have exact walking directions. When I went a couple of years ago, there wasn't much signage. Get there a few minutes early to check in.
And as Laurel said, it's cold - and it's humid too. I went in winter, so I was dressed for it - winter-ish clothes, fleece jacket, shoes and socks.
It's down this track in the park: https://goo.gl/maps/AZLvdrBWmSqWY4HLA
Digitally turn left and you'll see the Colosseum.
Thanks, Dario!
Google Street View is incredible!
Rich, I do virtual walks in google street view all the time! It's really nice when checking to see what's around our accommodations, and to identify visual waymarkers on walking routes from, say, train station to hotel. It's a very useful tool!
