Domodossola 1 night stay

There will be 8 or us travelling from Paris to Domodossola for just a 1 night stay then taking the train the next morning to Venice. Any suggestions on where to eat and stay? We are fine with either a hotel or a B&B. Is there an open air market on Saturday?

I haven't stopped in Domodossola, and it may indeed be a great place to stop-over (I only saw it from the train as we passed through last summer), but here's another suggestion based on your route. Just 30 minutes south of Domodossola (on the way to Milan, which is where you'll make your connection to the Venice train) is the town of Stresa, a gorgeous resort town on a huge lake. Lots of hotels, restaurants, shops and amazing views. We stopped over for one night on our way from Germany to Cinque Terre, and wish we could have stayed longer. Something to consider...

gabe,

You should be able to find some good hotels in Domodossola on Trip Advisor or similar websites. As you're only staying there one night, you probably won't have a lot of time for "open air markets". Ask the desk staff at the hotel to recommend good restaurants in the vicinity of the hotel.

Depending on what time you leave Paris, you won't arrive in Domodossola until late afternoon. Keep in mind that it could take awhile to get eight people up, finish breakfast, check-out and get to either Gare de Lyon or Paris Est. Once you check into your hotel in Domodossola, have supper and explore a bit, that will take care of the evening. The following morning you'll need to get the group moving again and get checked out early and on the train to Venice.

The easiest train solution from Domodossola to Venezia S. Lucia appears to be a direct departure at 10:17, arriving 14:40.

I will say that I think in all the years I have participated in these Forums and their predecessor the Helplines, it is the first time that I have ever heard of anybody wanting to stop for a night there.

Usually it is just where the Swiss train crew and border control get off, and are replaced by Italian ones, and the train continues on towards Milano.

I believe that there are some local Regionale trains from Milano which finish at Domodossola.

My little bit of trivia is that Domodossola is the southern limit for BLS train crew who run the SBB trains from Bern via Spiez. And it is the end of the Swiss passes, even though it is well inside Italy.

If you are just looking for a stopping point short of Milan, have you considered Brig, Sion, or Stresa?
