Dome Climb question (Duomo in Florence)

We will be sightseeing Florence for a full 2 days (arriving in Florence the afternoon before). We are considering the Firenze Card basically for the skip-the-line privilege. If we do decide to get a Firenze Card, and we went to the Duomo the afternoon we get in (a Thursday), would it be realistic to expect that we could reserve a time Friday or Saturday to climb the dome? And do our tickets still remain 48 hour tickets, as the standard combo ticket would be?

Otherwise, we will just reserve our times for everything in advance and purchase tickets for sights individually in advance.

Thanks for you help!

Edited to add: The Duomo combo ticket you get online is the actual ticket. It contains a barcode to use at the turnstile at each Duomo site and a separate barcode for the Dome climb. You have to print these tickets, especially the barcode, on paper. They don't work using a smartphone or Ipad/Tablet, as it says on the booking website.

The general recommendation on Tripadvisor is to purchase the Duomo combo ticket online in advance if you want to climb the Dome/Cupola, regardless of whether or not you are getting the Firenze Card.

If you check the booking website at the moment the Dome climb is sold out for the next two days and has only one time slot available on the third day from now. It is usually sold out like this for almost 3 days ahead. In spite of this, somebody on Tripadvisor recently said that, while this was the case online, there were, nevertheless, Dome climb places available on the ticket machine in Florence. But, if you really don't want to miss doing the Dome climb it is better to purchase the combo ticket online.

You have 30 days, from the date you select on the calendar when booking, to start using the Duomo combo ticket. The 72 hours use of the ticket starts with the first Duomo site you enter.
This was changed earlier this year from 6 days and 48 hours.

If you have the Firenze Card and use it to get the Duomo combo ticket, then this is the first use of the Firenze Card's 72 hours. You then have 30 days to start using the Duomo combo ticket. But, there is a risk of losing out on the Dome climb within your time-frame.

FOR INFO: The following is a popup message that appears on the Firenze Card website the first time you access it.

"THE ACCESS TO CUPOLA IS NOT GUARANTEED AND THE RESERVATION IS COMPULSORY
You have to collect the free ticket at the museum ticket office in Piazza San Giovanni,7; after that, you have to make your reservation on the dedicated screen.
PLEASE NOTE that the collection of the free ticket is considered to be 'first entrance': the Firenzecard validity of 72h will start running out since then.
Temporary suspension of access priority to Campanile di Giotto, Battistero di S.Giovanni, Cripta di Santa Reparata and Museo dell'Opera del Duomo."

I've not done the Duomo climb, so others can speak to the availability of tickets. However, keep in mind the Firenze card is now 85 EU per person and it's good for 72 hours. Looks like you won't be in Florence a full 72 hours, so do the math and see if it's really worth it for the time you have and the places you want to go. Two Firenze cards = 170 EU which is about $200. It's probably cheaper to get your tickets in advance for the big places, like the Uffizi and Accademia to see David. Just something to consider. Enjoy Florence, it's a beautiful city. I'll be there myself this October!

Thanks for this information!! We may very well just purchase tickets for everything individually. I can make reservations well in advance for anything we want to see. Thanks guys!!

We just got back from our trip and I didn't have any issues scanning our barcodes from my phone on the turnstiles.
(Note that I had paper copies just in case, but decided to try the PDF from my phone to test, and they worked).

Just to add, it's a 2 part process when entering...
1--Show or give your cupola ticket (one with the scheduled entrance time) before entering the Duomo.

2--Once you're inside...scan your barcode for your Duomo receipt/tickets (NOT the Cupola barcode with the entrance time) at the turnstiles.
If you bought 4 tickets...you should 4 different barcodes and scan them individually .

There were a few instances where the folks trying to get in couldn't get pass the turnstiles because they were scanning the wrong barcode.
