Dolomiti.....where to go?

2007, we loved Castelrotto/Kastelruth- 3 nights/2 days hiking-stayed at RS suggested Tirlerhof farm.
2010 did not really love Cortina d'Ampezzo....overbuilt/not as easy hiking....but spectacular scenery!

2016.....the question???...
Castelrotto, again, or Val Gardena or Corvara/Colfasco? How do you pick a village?!?
We are looking for moderate hiking & mountain views from our balcon. We prefer gasthof to hotels.
We will have a car.
Vielen danke/grazie-

I prefer the area just north of Lienz, Austria--which is east of Cortina on the IT/AU border. The Grossglockner is Europe's second highest peak, and the most beautiful place I've ever seen. There are also a number of fine accommodations and even luxury resorts in the area.

Ortisei is the ticket, at least for hiking on the Seiser Alm and Rasciesa.

Hi Patsy,

La Villa, Alta Badia. Stay at either the Ciasa Montanara or next door at the Garni Tamarindo. They are owned by brothers.

The views from the balcony's are quintessential Dolomite views. Incredible. The breakfasts (incl.) are also incredible :)

By the way, The Grossglockner, in Austria, is nowhere near being the second highest peak in Europe. David continues to give people this misinformation for some reason.

The Val Gardena is so easily accessible with great mountain views. My favorite is Ortisei with it's cute little pedestrian area, good restaurants, and access to both the Alpe di Siusi and Puez-Odle areas for easy hiking. Lots of garni in the area, the small family-run guest houses as well as some fine B&Bs. Best mountain views are if you stay on the north side of Ortisei and look south. OR you could stay in the Alpe di Siusi at Hotel Saltria or Hotel Panorama for a full-immersion experience. We've done that twice and loved it.

Selva and Santa Christina also have fabulous views of the Sella Grupa, but Colfosco is a good choice as well.
