Dolomiti destination

Driving north with rental car from Mestre into the Dolomiti in late September and would like suggestions on best place to spend a few days other than Cortina diAmpezo. Continuing from there into Austria toward either Salzburg or else Graz. Hoping for a special hotel, beautiful location, lake and mountains with good food. 3-4 star accomodation. Suggestions? Have read good comments on the Val Gardena area, if we stayed there (Alta Bada maybe?) in which case I think we'd head up to Innsbruck to stopover for final leg to Vienna.

You might consider the Alta Pusteria https://www.pustertal.org/en/pusteria/alta-pusteria/. We enjoyed a few nights in tiny Moso but nearby Sesto has more options. The (relatively) larger town of San Candido is at a slightly lower elevation and is quite lovely for a convenient base. The area is a stone’s throw from the Austrian Border.

Hey rfbreuer. We're going to be staying in Ortesei in two weeks. We're staying @ Hotel Drones. I'd seen it recommended many times on Rick's forums. They have great food, I hear and the family who owns it is very kind and involved. Check out TripAdvisor too. I believe it's a four-star hotel. I also like Ortesei/Hotel Drones because you are within walking distance of both the gondola to the Seceda ridge and the gondola to Alpe di Sues.

I’ve been to Ortisei three times and it’s the clear winner, hands down. You’ve got hiking options up to Seceda or Alpe di Siusi from your doorstep. From there you can head straight up to Innsbruck.
