Dolomites - Where to stay?

Hi everyone,

I am planning a trip to Italy in August and would love to get the chance to visit the Dolomites. I've been looking at places to stay or towns to visit but I just don't know where to begin. I love the outdoors but I am on a budget. Any suggestions about ways to get there and where to stay would be great!!! Thanks!

How are you traveling, and what is your lodging price range or not to exceed price in euros or dollars per night?

I will be traveling by train or bus whichever is easiest and available. Price range would have to be around 50 to 75 euro

Cortina D'Ampezzo...the site of the '56 Winter Olympics, and a very different "Italian" experience. More Tyrolean but with pasta and red wine!

Cortina is out of the way, if you are going by train. While the Great Dolomite Road eventually leads to this Olympic site, the long bus ride will put you to sleep. South Tirol has a very active tourist board and many publications. If you want to stay inexpensively, try this website for farm vacations: www.roterhahn.it. Since South Tirol is German-speaking (for most) it will help you to know the bilingual names. A popular valley near train routes is the Grödnertal/Gardena and Kastelruth/Castelrotto is close to the tracks and yet very much in the center of the Dolomites. Brixen/Bressanone is just north and famous for its town center. Also consider staying in the capital of Bozen with its many accommodations. There isn't much on this RS forum or even tripadvisor.com, but you can find out prices and the huge array of lodgings on venere.com and similar hotel websites. Since I plan on visiting there next month, I have gathered the best reviews from different towns. Example: for Kastelruth, recommended is Pension Silbernagl ($60)
