Hi all - We are heading to the dolomites for two weeks this summer. A week in Mareno and then four days near Ortisei. We have another four days and wondering where to stay. Any thoughts would be great. thanks

Do you mean Merano? We were there this past September. It is a pretty city and there are day trip options. Do you have specific plans for Merano? Will you visit Bolzano from there? I'm asking because I think a week is a very long time to be in Merano.

I can't believe I'm saying this because on our trip we avoided Cortina because of cost, and I thought it would be snooty and touristy. We liked the vibe and views in Cortina and stopped for a late lunch at a friendly little roadside sandwich and beer/wine restaurant with 360 views and very economical prices. We ended up staying about a half hour from Cortina.

When we left the Ortisei/Castelrotto area, we drove up to Bressanone and then down to Cortina and then to Venice. The scenery was stunning and we especially enjoyed the tre cime di Lavaro area.

Merano is likely to be hot--maybe extremely hot--in the summer. At the very least, be sure the reviews for your selected lodging indicate the air conditioning is solid. I have no experience with researching lodging options in Merano, but I know not everything in Bressanone and Bolzano is air conditioned.

Weather in Merano -- July 2024

That graph shows actual temperatures at several times each day. Use the pull-down box at the right, just above the graph, to change the month and year displayed. I like to look at the most recent five years for the appropriate month.

Use the Search box at the upper right to change the location.

A couple of things to note:

  1. If you are going in July or Aug, then be sure to book your hotels ASAP. Europeans often book months in advance.

  2. Why not combine your stay in the Lake Garda area with the Dolomites?

  3. Merano is very nice with lots of excursion options.

  4. Try to avoid Cortina, which will host the next Winter Olympics. Construction may affect your views or create noise issues.
