Dolomites to lake garda

Hello, we are a party of 4 , who will be in the Dolomites for 6 days in September. We will be training up to selva Gardena from Venice.
3 questions.
Do we need a car while we are trekking?
What is the best way to get from selva Gardena to lake Garda?
Or does anyone know if there is a private driver to take us to lake Garda?
Cheers Jackie

I don't know what kind of training you're going to be doing, but traveling in mountainous areas is often best done via automobile--especially when you may can split the costs. Trains and buses often don't go from point A to point B.
From Selva Gardena, you'd go west a short distance to Bolzano and get on motorway A22 South. It's not really that far, and the driving is easy. Depending on where you go on Lake Garda, it'll be running on your right. The lake is essentially west and northwest of Verona, and it's a pretty long stretch of water.
You might see wheret to go on Google.com/maps or https://www.google.com/maps/place/39048+Selva+di+Val+Gardena+Province+of+Bolzano+-+South+Tyrol,+Italy/@46.0765625,11.2235967,10.44z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x477814e5b51a73e9:0x18d0e61a4dfb813c!8m2!3d46.5564624!4d11.7546575

When we travel through any mountainous area, it's by rental car. And we've been all over Northern Italy and Tirol in Austria many trips.

We stayed at Salò on south west side Lake Garda driving up to Ortisei and at Malcesine on north east side of Lake Guarda when leaving Dolomites. We traveled from the Piedmonte to Salò and on to Bologna after Malcesine. Both towns were nice, Salò more upscale and mainly attracted German speaking tourists. It was a nice way to break our long drives by staying on Lake Garda.

thank you. We might look at hiring a car in Bolzano to lake Garda. The other couple would rather get a private driver as they don't want to drive.

You can get to Selva via a bus or taxi from the station in Bolzano. Take a train from Venice to Bolzano. The taxi is about Euro 90.00, last I knew, and while we've taken the bus several times, we now treat ourselves to the taxi. Once in Selva, you do not need a vehicle. Your lodging will give you a pass for using on all of the buses in the Val Gardena while you stay there, and you will use the various lifts to get to your treks. Your hotel or B&B can recommend a taxi company and arrange for them to pick you up at the train station.
