Which area would you stay in... we'll be driving through on our way from Stresa to Venice? i.e. Trentino or Cortina d'Ampesso?

I like the Val Gardena in the Dolomites, however any place would be good.
You should know however the Dolomites represent a bit of a detour on the route from Lake Maggiore to Venice, therefore you should plan to spend a couple of nights in the Dolomites. Another possibility is lake Garda, which is along the way, however since you are going already to lake Maggiore (and probably nearby lake Orta) maybe you are not interested in another lake.

Yes I realize it's a detour but we've been to a couple of lake previously and want to see Stresa. We have 3 to 4 weeks to do this route then on to San Marino, Tuscany & Rome; but do want to see the Dolomites.
