It seems difficult to take a train from Milan to the Dolomites region. How close can we get by train? Is the Eurail pass accepted on Italian trains? Thanks.

You can get to Bolzano. There is very good bus service from there to the towns. In the Dolomites. Your pass will be good on the trains but you may have to pay for seat reservations, as they are mandatory on IC and ES trains. Not on R (regional) trains.
