for Dolomite information...including places to stay & activities
Here is a good start. http://www.valgardena.it/en/
I couldn't get Sam's site to link to this one, but this has the info on activities from June 1st on if you click on the town that interests you and then click on Summer. We'll be there in early June too.
Sam's link worked fine on my ipad, and that is a good website for info on Val Gardena. Here is one for Alpe di Siusi: http://www.alpedisiusi.info/en/info/welcome.html
And you should also look at Val Badia but I cannot post a link without exiting.
Val Gardena is on the north side of Alpe di Siusi and there are lifts up from several towns ( Ortesei, Santa Cristina and Selva). Val Badia is just east over a pass, with different hiking areas.
I have stayed in all three areas and it is all good. As for activities, take your pick: hiking, via ferratas, mountain biking, horseback riding, shopping, great food, photography, wildflower tracking, spas ( in some hotels), riding lifts, hut to hut walks, you name it.
Will you have a car or use public transport? That may determine where you go. Also how many people, how long and what is your budget? Accommodations range from mountain huts to simple Garni to 5* hotels to apartments.
We are headed there in July for the third year. Our personal preference is to stay in the Val Gardena (specifically Ortisei) and the Alpe di Siusi. Be sure to buy a Val Gardena Pass if you go there. It allows you to ride most of the lifts, gondolas and buses, and it will save you money. You can buy it at the TI. I have written about our trips in my blog if you are interested.
Take the gondola up to the top of the Marmolata. Hike on the Seiser Alm...stunningly beautiful! Visit the Drei Zinnen and hike around them if you have time. The mountain passes are spectacular to drive if you have the nerve...
Hello, every season is a good season to see Dolomites, please watch the clip we made this summer after visiting Val Gardena, Pordoi,Sella,Giau, Val Parola,Fedaia and a little village Sottoguda with the great gorge. Hope you'll like it :-) It was the second time we were there in the summer and it was great - not so many people as in other mountains, fine weather and spectacular views.
