Dolomites in the end of May?

i've read that the lifts to get around in the dolomites region will be closed until the beginning of june but if we were to go we'll be arriving during the last week of may. we will not be driving either. though i would love to spend some time in the dolomites to see it's magnificent beauty is visiting the dolomites just not a good idea for us? if you think we should do it what would be a good itinerary for us? thanks!

Helen, it is true the lifts are closed in May for the most part. Also, you may find some of the accomodations closed. The good thing is there are not that many tourists during May and the room rates are not as high. I cannot help with the public transportation but there are probably buses available. If you could rent a car for the Dolomite visit it would be a better alternative. A beautiful drive that time of year and you can stop whenever you wish to take photos and just enjoy the views. Find a nice spot and have a picnic lunch while soaking in the beautiful scenery.

Hi Helen,

Most lifts are closed in May. Here's the opening dates (2009) for the Val Gardena lifts:

WhileI don't know much about this one, the Seiser Alm Bahn does begin running on May 22, 2010. The Seiser Alm/Alpe di Siusi is a terrific area for walks and hikes with a Dolomite backdrop.

I have to say I have no experience with public transportation in the area. I believe you can train to Bozen/Bolzano or Brixen/Bressanone and get buses from here into the Dolomites. Both have charming old towns (we love Brixen!) but are not "in" the Dolomites. They're close but about an hour away.

I agree with Lane that having a car in the Dolomite region is ideal, especially at this time of year (with most cable cars closed) since a drive over a pass or two will give you many opportunities for walks, hikes and close up Dolomite scenery.

We could be of more help if we knew a bit more about your trip... how many days/nights are you looking to spend in the area, where you'll be coming from and where you'll be heading after the Dolomites. Maybe I (we) could come up with some better suggestions.
