Hello,
Me and my wife are planning to travel to Dolomites in mid may 2016. Is Bolzano Bozen a good place to keep base. Also wanted to hire a motorbike to travel on the dolomite roads (which route is a good option?). Are there any lifts which take you to the top for a view and are they open in mid may?
Lastly how many days should i spend to view the dolomites?

The lift schedules contained in this link for the Val Gardena show not much running in mid-May. Bolzano is not really in the mountains. You are more likely to have a mountain experience if you go further east to the Val Gardena and one of the three little towns there.
No idea on motorbike travel, but I would stay 4 nights if you go. This allows for the possibility of less-than-perfect weather. If you go all that way for 2 nights and hit bad weather on your one day, it would be sad.
You can easily do this by bus and train. Train to Bolzano and bus to the V.G. Even if the lifts are not running, you can do some trekking in the valley. A stop in Bolzano for 2-3 hours (between train arrival and bus departure) is worthwhile.
