Dolomites in late October

My husband and I will be in the Dolomites in late October (celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary). We've recently found out that many of the lifts are closed beginning late September. (Do you know which ones will still be open?) We're also having difficulty finding 3 & 4-star hotels still open from October 26th-30th in the Cortina, Italy area. Unfortunately, our dates are locked in since our hotels before & after Cortina are already booked. We were wondering if you have any insights on really nice "mountain view" places to stay as well as what "do not miss" sights do you recommend in the Cortina area? -- We will have a rental car so we're very flexible. In addition, we have a rental car question. We will be flying into Salzburg, Austria... renting a car to drive to, and stay in, Hallstatt, Austria, before going to Cortina, Italy.... then we will be driving to the Cinque Terre, San Marino, Orvieto and before flying out of Rome. Our question is, do you suggest we turn in the car before crossing the Austrian border.... take a train to Bolzano and pick up another rental car there before heading to Cortina...or just keep the same Austrian rental car and just drop it off in Rome? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!

It is very expensive to drop an Austrian rental car in Rome, since it will have to be transported back to Austria before it can be rented again. Guess who pays for that plus the days of lost rental income?

The Ortisei-Alpe di Siusi gondola stays open until November 1. Stay in Ortisei, should be several hotels still open then. The ultra swank Hotel Adler will.
