Dolomites in Late May

Leaving from Milan for 2 days in Dolomites. Thinking of taking the train from Milan. Where should we stay? I've heard about Bolzano and Cortina. I know Bolzano isn't in the mountains but heard we could take a train for the day further into Dolomites. We're looking to walk trails and enjoy scenery. Thanks.

Bus is more likely if u stay in Bolzano. If u can and if u stay enuf days in dolomites , cortina is a better choice for wlk hiking. It is a slow and very windy road thru the mtns. Best stay in cortina to truely enjoy the stunning dolomits.

I have not been to Cortina d'Ampezzo, but I have been to Ortisei in the Val Gardena many times.

Cortina is almost 6 hours by train and bus from Milan, whereas Ortisei is about 5 1/4. Neither is a short trip; Both will land you "in the mountains" versus Bolzano which is a bit peripheral.

In the Val Gardena, only a few lifts will be open, (You can look at the schedule here), but there is specatacular walking and scenery. Hope you have at least 3 nights to spend!

Hi,

I agree that the Val Gardena makes more sense logistically. There will also be a couple of cable cars running by mid May in this valley. This is about 45 minutes from Bolzano. Stay in one of the three towns/villages in the Val Gardena... Ortisei, St. Christina or Selva. They are all close enough to one another (5 minutes by bus from one to the next) where it doesn't really matter which you choose. Ortisei is the largest and has a small pedestrian only zone. It also has the Mont Seuc/Seiser Alm cable car, which opens mid May and goes directly up to the beautiful Seiser Alm/Alpe di Siusi. St. Christina is the smallest and in the middle of the the three. We liked our stay here in St. Christina:
