Dolomites in January

Hi there!

My friends and are looking to plan a trip to Italy at the end of January. For one part of the trip, we hope to go to the Dolomites for about three day, but we need help on picking and narrowing down a town/city to stay in! Any suggestions? We'll be coming by ways of Venice or Rome (haven't decided on where yet) on public transportation. There are some in our group who would like to ski, but the others are looking for other outdoor and indoor activities to do. Thanks!

I'd vote for Selva. You can take the train as far as Bolzano and take the bus from there. Skiing should be good then. There is an ice arena in town. And even if you don't ski, you can get a walkers pass to ride lifts visit some of the rifugios on the mountain, some of which have really good food.

Sam suggested Selva and I would say anywhere in the Val Gardena: Selva, Santa Christina, or Ortisei. You will be given a pass by your hotel of B&B to use the buses in the valley free of charge. It is wonderful to take the lift up at Ortisei and hike in the Alpe di Siusi in the winter, as well as at Rasciesa. And of course there is skiing all over the valley.
